Back in May, Elon Musk announced that his company, OpenAI, would embark on a mission to create robots that emulate human learning abilities. Now, Musk has announced via Twitter Friday night that OpenAI robots are the first-ever to defeat the world’s best players in competitive eSports.
More specifically, OpenAI brought its 1-v-1 robot to The International 2017 tournament to battle pro players in the game DotA which, as Musk explains above, is “vastly more complex than traditional board games like chess & Go.” In just a two-week period of real-time learning, OpenAI’s bots managed to defeat some of the world’s best DotA players.
“Our bot has learned — entirely via self-play — to predict where other players will move, to improvise in response to unfamiliar situations, and how to influence the other player’s allied units to help it succeed,” OpenAI explained in a blog post.
The non-profit AI research company’s next task will be to create a team of 5-v-5 DotA 2 bots capable of defeating top human teams.
