Apple today said it will introduce hundreds of new emoji with the debut of iOS 11.1 as soon as next week. The company has baked support for Unicode 10 into the future release of iOS and plans to disseminate it to developers and beta testers in the days ahead. Unicode 10 includes new characters, food, animals, creatures, and hand gestures. Apple says the new emoji will be available within iOS, macOS, and watchOS. Apple didn’t say when the final version of iOS 11.1 will be available.
The Unicode Consortium this week announced Unicode 10, which includes 56 new emoji characters and four new scripts. Some of the new emoji include facial expressions (raised eyebrow, hand-over-mouth), more men and women (bearded man, woman in head garb), hand symbols, food (dumpling, fortune cookie), clothing items, animals (dinosaurs, bugs), vehicles (flying saucer, sled), and a curling stone.
Apple has made iOS 10.2 Beta 2 available to both developers and public beta testers. Apple has not publicly listed the new features in iOS 10.2, but a handful are present in the test build of the operating system.
