Local toy store owners anticipate impact from possible Toys R Us closures

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) –

One local toy shop is preparing for an impact after reports of big toy retailer Toys R Us considering closing their stores.

The news comes months after the retailer filed for Ch. 11 bankruptcy.

Now multiple reports say sources tell them the company is considering filing for Ch. 7 bankruptcy and liquidating, meaning they would close all their stores.

“It will affect us,” said Rich Morgan, who owns Saga Toys in South County. “Not necessarily in a positive way.”

He and his wife opened the shop two years ago and have found ways to set themselves apart and keep customers away from solely online shopping.

“It’s been challenging at times and at times,” he said, “bills are coming in faster than money is but we just stuck through the hard times and we’re going to keep doing it as hard as we can.”

The store could face another hurdle if Toys R Us closes for good.

“Those manufacturers are going to want to you know recoup some of that money,” he said, “so the prices for toys our cost is going to go up.”

The store sells vintage products as well as new toys popular with kids.

Morgan thinks the newer toy manufacturing prices would go up the most.

For now, he’s focusing on creating events that no online store can offer to bring in customers.

Kelly Otte likes the nostalgia the shop brings.

“To see old and new and remembering, ‘oh I remember when I was young that was out’,” she said,  “so we enjoy it a lot.”

She’s sad to hear Toy R Us may now close but is happy to have another toy option nearby.

“We will be here,” she said, “we’ll definitely be back and shop here all the time.”
