In the process of monitoring U.S. wireless pricing/promos for its subscribers, Wave7 Research recently discovered that Sprint has been regionally testing two enhanced versions of its unlimited plan in six different markets. Some of the pricing of what Sprint is calling its “Ultimate HD” or “Unlimited SD” plans vary from market to market. Sprint is testing the new packages in three regions, each made up of two cities. The three pairs are Atlanta and Phoenix, Minneapolis and Charlotte, and New Orleans and St. Louis.
In Atlanta and Phoenix, Sprint is offering four lines of what it is calling “Ultimate Unlimited” for $35/month per line. After one-year, pricing rises to $65/month for line 1, $45/month for line 2 and $25/month for lines 3-4. Auto Pay is required, and there are certain conditions, fees and caveats included with the plan. In Minneapolis and Charlotte, Sprint is advertising a plan that it calls “50% off Verizon.” It requires a new customer to either bring four existing phones, or buy them from Sprint. Meeting that requirement will allow consumers to get four lines with unlimited data for $25/month per line. After one-year, pricing goes to $55/month for line 1, $35/month for line 2 and $15/month for lines 3-4. Once again, Auto Pay is required, and there are certain conditions, fees and caveats included with the plan.
For those in New Orleans and St. Louis, consumers bringing their phone to Sprint receive one free month of unlimited data. Those making the switch to the carrier will receive four lines of unlimited for $35/month per line. After one-year is up, pricing goes to $65/month for line 1, $45/month for line 2 and $25/month for lines 3-4. Guess what? Auto Pay is required, and there are certain conditions, fees and caveats included with the plan.
“Customers within the trial markets will have the option to choose from an SD or HD Unlimited Data plan. Right now, new customers are eligible to be upgraded to HD for a year, for up to 10 lines. So, all the prices you see…are for SD or HD unlimited plans.”-Kathleen Dunleavy, spokeswoman, Sprint
Ms. Dunleavy’s comment really doesn’t seem to be full of details. Still, we can tell you that besides the special pricing, consumers in the six test markets receive:
- Free Hulu subscription
- Free 6-month trial of Tidal HiFi streaming music
- 15GB of high-speed hotspot data
- Additional options for global roaming
Sprint’s current national unlimited data plan offers the free Hulu subscription, the trial to Tidal, 10GB of high-speed hotspot data and global roaming for $25/month per line for four lines, and a free fifth line is tossed in. After March 31, 2019, lines 3 and higher will go up in price to $30/month per line. Video is streamed at a maximum of 1080p, games at 8Mbps and music at 1.5Mbps. Auto Pay is required.
